Spend a few months building free education for the world

Khan Academy‘s content is used by classrooms and individuals in over 25 languages around the world. More than 2 billion interactive math problems have been done. The faculty’s videos have been viewed over 400,000,000 times.

As an intern, any improvement you make can instantly help millions of students learn whatever they want, whenever they want. If this type of educational scale excites you, Khan Academy needs your help to educate the entire world.

Why join Khan Academy?

At Khan Academy, the internship program is treated as the healthiest, most important source of full-time recruiting they have. From day one to the end of your internship you’ll have an experienced teammate who considers it their job to make sure you’re growing the skills you need.

The people you’ll work with come from all walks of life and are available to teach you new tricks and tell stories about their past. Whatever you’re working on, you’ll find a teammate interested in helping you learn.

Interns help solve the hardest challenges

Unlike other internships, you won’t be tossed a list of edge-case bugs that nobody else wants to solve. You’ll be expected to maturely own a project that may affect millions of students.

Software Development

Khan Academy is looking for talented software developers to create a free virtual classroom for the world.

Software Developers tackle world-changing engineering challenges that have never been solved before. They run A/B tests to increase learning and affect real lives (not just page views). Khan Academy reimagines ways for students to learn together online. And they scale the infrastructure needed to handle millions of users.

Qualifications:

  • A passion for software and engaging learning experiences, as well as desire to change the world.
  • An ability to chew through difficult software problems. You probably noticed this ability not long after you first sat down in front of a computer. You leave a trail of successful software projects in your wake.
  • Passion for whatever technology you’ve used in the past.
  • The great intuition for how users like to learn, and a mastery of the subjects you took in high school and college. You’re not afraid of any integral and know you can master any subject that you put your mind to.

Data Science

Data Scientists and Engineers focus on unlocking the unique power of the dataset to improve the learning experience of the users. Khan Academy builds a technology toolkit (a data warehouse, distributed compute environment, and collection of useful APIs) to turbo-charge their own research.

At Khan Academy, they design thoughtful experiments using their open-source A/B testing framework to determine what works and what doesn’t. They collaborate closely with the developers and designers to help shape the future of the product.

Qualifications:

  • Knowing how to code. We’re a small team tackling big problems; you’ll make the biggest impact if you can code efficiently and contribute to our research infrastructure.
  • Passion for whatever technology you’ve used in the past.
  • Solid command of basic statistics and a strong quantitative aptitude. Machine learning and advanced stats not required, but it sure doesn’t hurt.
  • Pragmatism and demonstrated skill at turning data into action.
  • A passion for data and desire to change the world.

Mobile Development

Khan Academy is looking for top-notch iOS and Android developers to help create mobile versions of their free virtual classroom for the world.

Mobile Developers change the way that people learn by leveraging the power and convenience of mobile devices. They build a beautiful, high-performance mobile app with a delightful user experience. They collaborate closely with designers and developers to make educational Khantent available on any platform.

Khan Academy believes mobile apps play an important role in the future of education, and they want you to help us make this vision a reality.

Product Design

Product Designers tackle world-changing design challenges that have never been solved before. They design, prototype, and build a beautiful product that makes learning fun again. Khan Academy conducts user research to inform their design process. And they’re changing the way that people think about education.

The design team is still small, highly leveraged, and they expect every member to be making contributions across the board. As a good candidate, you will have a great portfolio with a string of successful projects in your wake. Your friends and coworkers think of you as the go-to person for at least two of these:

  • User experience design
  • User interface design
  • Graphic design
  • Navigation and information architecture

Khan Academy also expects their designers to have solid technical skills. You should have a set of tools that you love to use when designing, and you can show us how you’ve used them in the past to make great products. Oh, also, you’re not afraid of code, and you’ve probably written some Javascript.
