A Novato man was sentenced to a year in jail Thursday for a drunken hit-and-run collision that injured another driver.

Moises Ivan Licea-Luis, 24, was ordered to surrender to the jail on Nov. 17 to serve the sentence. The judge also placed him on probation for five years.

The crash occurred on July 3, 2016, on South Novato Boulevard near Center Road. Licea-Luis was traveling at about 75 mph in a 35 mph zone when he ran a red light, struck another car, kept driving, blew another red light and almost struck two pedestrians, the prosecution said.

Police said the driver of the other car suffered minor injuries.

Licea-Luis registered a blood-alcohol level of .17 percent, more than twice the legal limit. He was also unlicensed, had concentrated cannabis in his car and had a prior DUI conviction, the prosecution said.

Licea-Luis pleaded guilty to all charges. The prosecution argued for a sentence of two years in state prison.

The probation department did not recommend prison, said Licea-Luis’ public defender, Tamara York. She said Licea-Luis has been to at least one Alcoholics Anonymous meeting a day for some 400 days, and has been wearing an ankle monitor with no violations.

Judge Andrew Sweet sentenced Licea-Luis to the jail time instead of prison.
