Long Island, NY

Police interactions and black citizens aren’t meshing well these days. Just ask recently slain victims Alton Sterling, Philando Castile or Charles Kinsey, the latter subject being the man who endured a non-lethal shot by Miami police as he lay on the ground with his hands in the air and clearly instructed officers that neither he or the Autistic man he was caring for posed any threat.

Long Island rapper King Myers is hip to the social injustices that currently plague the country, which directly inspired his latest single, “Amerikkka” off his album, Kingology. The song directly references the Sterling shooting and when local Suffolk County cops pulled him over on Thursday, July 21, he found himself using the lyrics as ammunition.

According to Myers, the traffic stop was a direct reaction after he and his buddy and fellow rapper Taz.Li, made eye contact with the officers in the squad car (stop us if you’ve heard that before) after a short trail and follow, they were pulled over.

“We rolled past them and just made eye contact and I knew they were about to mess with us,” Myers, 21, born Da’Shawn Ellis, told the NYDailyNews. According to his recollection, the officer then asked “Hey, aren’t you a rapper? Let me hear something,” to which Myers replied, “Are you sure?’”

It was then, Myers pulled some of the fiercest lyrics from his “AmeriKKKa” record that mentioned the Sterling shooting: “They try to justify why they murder us, they taking our lives but label us the burglars … It’s worse now. We gettin’ killed for selling CDs.”

The caption on Myers’ Instagram recants alluding to the officers having an integral knowledge of his celebrity.
