Freezing rain leads to closures of all highways into Metro Vancouver

It was impossible last night to use any highways to drive into Metro Vancouver.

Highways 1, 3, 5, 99, and the Coquihalla were all closed due to icy conditions and/or avalanche risk.

Drive BC reported that there were "multiple vehicle incidents" along the Coquihalla.

This led to long traffic tie-ups as hundreds slept in their vehicles overnight.

The Coquihalla is expected to reopen around 10 a.m. today.

This morning, Highway 3 was reopened from Hope to Manning Park Lodge after the risk of avalanche was downgraded.

However, the avalanche risk has kept Highway 1 closed from Hope to Lytton.

Highway 5 is now open from Logan Lake to Merritt.

Meanwhile, public schools remain closed today in Chilliwack, Mission, and the Fraser-Cascade school district because of the weather.

All college and university campuses in the mainland area of southwest B.C. are open today.
