Rise and shine: Japanese fishermen offer wake-up calls

Facing falling numbers, men of the sea turn to new service to raise awareness

A new service launched by Fisherman Japan offers wake-up calls by working fishermen as part of a project to raise awareness of the occupation.   © Fisherman Japan

TOKYO -- Those who struggle to get out of bed in the morning now have a chance to receive wake-up calls from an unlikely source of professional early risers: fishermen.

It may sound like another quirky service out of Japan, but in actuality it is a nonprofit initiative launched as part of a project led by a group of fishermen in the northeastern coastal city of Ishinomaki to raise awareness of their declining occupation and connect with the younger generation.
