Chicago rapper Chief Keef arrested in Sioux Falls

Chicago rapper Chief Keef was arrested Monday at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport on marijuana and drug paraphernalia charges.

Keith Cozart, who performs under the name Chief Keef, was arrested around 8:30 a.m. after airport security found two THC edibles and four blunts in his carry-on, said Sioux Falls Police spokesman Sam Clemens.

The rapper was booked into the Minnehaha County Jail at 9:21 a.m. without bail. Cozart is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia of marijuana and possession of between two ounces and a half-pound of marijuana.

Cozart was scheduled to perform June 11 at the Ramkota Hotel, 3200 W. Maple St. Chief Keef performed an all-ages concert after an AntiBully celebrity basketball event, entertainment promoters Kowabunga Music confirmed. The event was at the USF Stewart Center to help raise awareness for an anti-bullying movement and brought in NFL players and UFC fighters.

Keef's performance was "great" and he "hung with fans" afterward, promoters for the event said. 

The promotion organization released the following statement, which has been lightly edited for grammar and clarity.

"He came to our city to help us have a day where (the) majority of our city youth is inside a safe place with friends enjoying their selves instead of out engaging in illegal activities, underage drinking driving, etc. Only The Stars and Kowabunga are only doing what this city is not willing to do: focus on our YOUTH. [sic] Chief has had his problems in the past and his fixed himself: just Google him. At the end of day he came out for a day of (engaging) in a serious cause we are working towards: fighting bullying."

The rapper, known for his violent lyrics, has collaborated with artists such as Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa and 50 Cent. He was dropped from the record label Interscope in 2014 amid reports of disappointing record sales.

In April, Cozart was arrested on a DUI charge in Miami, according to WPLG-TV. 

In January, TMZ reported that Cozart was arrested on charges he assaulted and robbed his former music producer in California.
