Los Angeles, CA

Introducing Ugly God for those who don’t know, the underground artist from Houston, Texas whose ridiculous videos on social media have catapulted him to viral stature. He is most famous for his music video “Water,” which has now reached 26 million views.

The truly crazy part of his career is, up until this day, he only has about 12 released songs to his name.

HipHopDX had the pleasure of catching up with _____ (his name is not to be revealed on the internet) at his sold out show in Los Angeles. It was a crowded night at The Echoplex on Sunset, and his fans were not going to be disappointed. This was the Lights, Camera, Booty Tour — a fitting description of his character.

Right off the bat, we get a taste of his sense of humor. He jokes, “I’m a pop/country artist coming up underground. Everything’s organic. Make music from my house. Just trying to do this as a regular guy. . . and stuff. It just works. Everything just works.”

Ugly God comes in perfect timing amongst the new wave of Lil Uzi’s and Lil Yachty’s. Speaking on the topic of mumble rap, Ugly God states, “Some people throw me in that realm, some don’t. But I think it’s kind of a disrespect to call it ‘mumble rap,’ when you can actually understand what they’re saying.”

“I like using Lil Yachty as an example, that’s a homie of mine. They’ll talk so much stuff about his music, and then he’ll drop more music. And they’ll talk shit about that. What doesn’t make sense to me, if you feel like he’s trash, why the fuck would you listen to something else he dropped? If you hate it, you wouldn’t even pay any mind or even pay attention to him.”

The Mumble Rap Controversy

“But instead, they want reactions. And they’re secretly fans. They’ll get him or Uzi on interviews just to talk shit or embarrass them, but at the end of the day, you pay him to be on the interview. You bought his flights out for you to come interview him. So they’re secretly fans. I’m the one speaking for that.”

“Memes! The meme videos. Memes are life. Memes is the business. Memes is the Internet. It’s a lifestyle.” Especially the ones he posts (found on his Instagram). The catch: he deletes most of them.

“I feel like I’m 21 Savage, I pull up and fuck on your daughter” (from the chorus in “Water”).

We’re definitely in an interesting time in Hip Hop when a rapper like Ugly God can admit to his lyrics being trash. And he doesn’t hope to improve.
