Trevor Noah Says Trump Went to Poland Because He Was Down in the Polls

Welcome to Best of Late Night, a rundown that lets you sleep — and lets us get paid to watch comedy. What do you think of it? What else are you interested in? Let us know: thearts@nytimes.com.

Most late-night hosts returned to the air on Monday after a week off. President Trump had been staying busy — and they pounced on his unorthodox behavior on a trip to Europe for the Group of 20 summit meeting.

“Unlike previous presidents who first visited Britain or France, Donald Trump chose Poland. Now, some people say it’s because Poland’s populist, media-hating politics are eerily similar to Trump’s. I think they told him he wasn’t doing well with the polls, and he was, like, ‘Well, you know what? I’ll talk to them myself.’” — TREVOR NOAH

“The most anticipated moment was President Trump’s face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin. I think it was Trump’s six-month performance review.” — STEPHEN COLBERT

On “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert riffed on reports that the president’s staff had failed even to book him a hotel room for his stay in Hamburg, Germany.

“The city of Hamburg stepped up and graciously let Trump stay in its Senate guesthouse. Because, unlike Trump, Germany is sympathetic to foreigners without a place to stay.” — STEPHEN COLBERT

Mr. Colbert reacted to the news that Donald Trump Jr. had met with a Russian lawyer during the presidential campaign, after he was promised damaging intelligence on Hillary Clinton. The host made it clear he did not exactly buy Mr. Trump’s shifting explanations of the meeting.

“It’s not a smoking gun, but it is a gun meeting with a Russian bullet — about their mutual desire to smoke.” — STEPHEN COLBERT

“The big news? Rob Kardashian’s Instagram meltdown over his ex. I bet when Donald Trump saw that on Twitter, he was like: It’s gotten worse, folks. Now there’s a Black China.” — TREVOR NOAH

“Over the weekend, Los Angeles experienced a massive heat wave. Some people were so desperate for air-conditioning, they even went to see the new ‘Transformers’ movie.” — CONAN O’BRIEN

Fans of “Game of Thrones” have never seen Kit Harrington like this.

Conan O’Brien will be broadcasting for much of next week from San Diego, where he will attend Comic-Con. This was a strange way to build anticipation.

Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC will sit down with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, presumably not to profess their love for President Trump.

The director of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow insists that the postponement of a much-anticipated ballet on the life of the dance legend Rudolf Nureyev had nothing to do with the ballet’s gay themes.
