Ariel Cohen, Louis Orren

Ariel Nikiya Cohen and Louis Howard Maurice Orren are to be married Aug. 13. Rabbi Randy E. Sheinberg is to officiate at the Carlyle on the Green in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Ms. Cohen, 31, is a middle-school reading teacher and provides support to students who are struggling with reading at the Northern Light School, a private school in Oakland, Calif. She graduated and received a master’s degree in teaching from Simmons College.

She is the daughter of Mindy Aloff of Brooklyn and Martin S. Cohen of New Hyde Park, N.Y. The bride’s father retired as the director of middle-market programs and services at the Conference Board, an organization in Manhattan that provides business research and insights to its members. Her mother is an editor at large, in Brooklyn, for the University Press of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., and is the author of “Hippo in a Tutu: Dancing in Disney Animation.” The bride is also the stepdaughter of Rabbi Sheinberg, who is the rabbi at Temple Tikvah in New Hyde Park.

Mr. Orren, 34, is a special-education teacher at Downtown Charter Academy, a middle school in Oakland. He graduated from California State University, Long Beach, received a credential in music education from California State, Los Angeles, and a credential in special education from California State, East Bay.

He is a son of Tyna Thall Orren and Lowell H. Orren of Pasadena, Calif. His parents are partners in Orren & Orren, a law firm in Pasadena.

The couple met in 2007 as counselors at Ramapo for Children, a camp in Rhinebeck, N.Y., for children with special needs.
