Womens' Basketball Gears Up for Season With 83-49 Win Over Kentucky State

MOREHEAD, Ky. - The Morehead State women's basketball team outscored Kentucky State 48-22 in the second half of Saturday's exhibition game as the Eagles pulled away for an 83-49 win over the Thorobreds at Johnson Arena.

Head coach Mike Bradbury received balanced production from his starters and bench as the bench scored 49 of the 83 points and no player had to see more than 23 minutes of action. Ohio Valley Conference preseason Player of the Year Chynna Bozeman led the Eagles with 15 points, while freshman forward Ashar Harris registered a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Martin also dotted double figures in the point column with 10.

After holding onto a 35-27 halftime advantage, MSU shot 52 percent (15-of-29) in the final 20 minutes while holding KSU to only 26 percent (7-of-27). The Eagles also were extremely efficient at the free throw line on the night hitting 22-of-26 for 85 percent. Ball movement also proved to be a key factor as MSU was credited for 22 assists of 26 baskets and hit nine three-pointers. MSU also blocked nine shots.

Kentucky State got 13 points each from Latrice Watkins and Stephanie Harper.

The Eagles out-rebounded the 'Breds 42-41. Deja Watson pulled down seven for the Eagles, while Tiffany Hamilton tallied six boards. Abby Steele topped the assist leaderboard with five.

MSU led 17-7 at the 10:15 mark of the first half after a Hamilton three-pointer, but the Thorobreds cut into the lead with a 12-5 run. At 5:15 left in the opening half, MSU led 22-17. Bozeman, Martin and Tiffanie Stephens drained treys in the next two minutes to push the advantage out to 33-19. The Eagles led 35-27 the the break.

A 16-6 run to start the final half ballooned the martin out to 20 (53-33) and from then on it only got larger. From the 15:34 mark to the 3:53 mark, MSU limited KSU to just two successful field goals. The largest lead was 36 on four occasions.

Morehead State hosts Pikeville College on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. for its final exhibition game. The game time was moved from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to accomodate the OVC soccer tournament championship match going on in Morehead that day
