Jill Dickinson, Jake Garcia

Jill Norah Lauren Dickinson and Jake Brian Garcia were married Aug. 12. Jessica E. Leeser, a friend of the bride who became a Universal Life minister for the occasion, officiated at the Greenpoint Loft, an event space in Brooklyn.

The bride, 29, is a public defender for the Legal Aid Society in Brooklyn. She graduated magna cum laude from American University in Washington and received her law degree from George Washington University.

She is a daughter of Wendy Buchanan Dickinson and Dr. Gregory T. Dickinson, both of Sarasota, Fla. The bride’s father retired as a dentist in Sarasota. Her mother is a mathematics teacher at the South County Career Center in Ruskin, Fla.

The groom, 29, is a documentary filmmaker who has worked as an editor on the National Geographic series “10 Nat Geo Explorers: 1 Question” and “On Assignment”. He is a freelance producer in Brooklyn. He graduated from Catholic University in Washington and received a master’s degree in documentary filmmaking from the New York Film Academy.

He is the son of Mary Talley Garcia and Terry D. Garcia of Washington. His mother is a library information consultant in Washington. His father is a strategic adviser to clients in a range of industries, and was until last year the chief science and exploration officer at the National Geographic Society, both in Washington. From 1997 to 1999, he was the assistant secretary at the Commerce Department for oceans and atmosphere, and the deputy administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also in Washington.

The couple met in Washington in 2012, at a holiday party given by a mutual friend.
