Women's Basketball Canisius College Athletics

Terry Zeh Receives Multi-Year Contract Extension

Canisius College director of athletics Bill Maher has announced that women's basketball coach Terry Zeh has received a contract extension through the 2012-13 season.

“From the MAAC Championship during his first season to a Division I record 24 wins and WNIT appearance last season, Terry has taken our women's basketball program to new levels during his five years as head coach,” Maher said. “Terry's commitment to our student-athletes and his tireless efforts in recruiting and developing the young women in our program are the key to the success we have had and to the bright future that our women's basketball program has under his leadership.”

In his five seasons, Zeh has posted a 92-62 record, with the 92 wins ranking second in program history at the Division I level and the .594 winning percentage serving as the program's best since it went to Division I in 1986. Zeh has led Canisius to its only two Division I postseason appearances, a Division I record 24 wins during the 2008-09 season and a 57-33 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in five years.

“I'm really excited about the opportunity to continue leading the women's basketball program at Canisius,” Zeh said. “In my 12 years at Canisius, I've had great opportunities to work with so many people who are committed to the academic and athletic excellence of our student-athletes. To be able to do that for years to come is an honor.”

During his five years as head coach, Canisius became the first women's basketball program from Western New York to qualify for the NCAA Tournament when the Golden Griffins won the MAAC Championship in 2005, Zeh's first season as head coach. Zeh also led Canisius to its first appearance in the WNIT during the 2008-09 season, the first Golden Griffin team consisting entirely of players recruited by Zeh.

Zeh is the only Canisius women's basketball coach to win 20 games in two seasons at the Division I level. Last season, Canisius posted a 24-9 record, the most wins by the program at the Division I level and most by a Canisius team in 25 years. Canisius ranks second in the MAAC with 58 MAAC victories during the past five seasons. Canisius has won 14 conference games in three of his five seasons and advanced to the MAAC Championship game twice.

Canisius has had a freshman selected to the MAAC all-Rookie Team from each of Zeh's four recruiting classes, including Amanda Cavo, the 2006 MAAC Rookie of the Year. Canisius is one of two schools in the MAAC to claim that distinction.

The Canisius women's basketball program earned a NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program public recognition award for the second consecutive season in 2007-08. The public recognition awards are presented to the best academically performing teams that rank in the top 10 percent within their sport in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). Canisius has also had 26 members of the MAAC All-Academic Team during Zeh's five seasons at Canisius.

Zeh's top two seasons have come in 2004-05 and in 2008-09, which both featured postseason appearances. His first season as head coach had a number of first-time accomplishments, highlighted by winning the 2005 MAAC Tournament title to lead the program to the school's NCAA Tournament game against Duke in Chapel Hill, N.C.  By taking the Griffs to the “Big Dance,” Zeh became the first MAAC women's head coach to guide his team to the postseason in his first year. It also marked just the second time in program history where a coach in his or her first season won 20-plus games.

In 2008-09, the Golden Griffins had one of the best seasons in program history — winning 24 games and achieving a number of individual and team accomplishments.

Canisius qualified for the WNIT for the first time in program history. Zeh became the third coach in program history to be named MAAC Coach of the Year. Brittané Russell became the second player in program history to be named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. Ellie Radke became the first player in program history to be named MAAC Sixth Player of the Year. Marie Warner was named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, the first MAAC women's basketball player to earn that award since 1996.

Canisius improved its win total by 11 games from the 2007-08 season, the fourth-best improvement in the country. The Griffs won a program-record 11 regular-season home games, 11 regular-season road games and had a program-record 11-game road winning streak. Canisius set Division I program records for fewest points allowed per game (59.0), fewest turnovers per game and most 3-point field goals in program history (254). Canisius was the only team in the country to rank in the top 15 of 3-point field goal percentage and 3-point field goals made per game.

The Golden Griffins return seven letterwinners from last season's team and start the 2009-10 season on Nov. 14, when the Griffs play at Mount St. Mary's.
