PHILADELPHIA – In a game with eight ties and 10 lead changes, it was Temple that came out on top in a tough overtime battle, winning 58-55 against Saint Joseph's (8-9, 1-1). Strong rebounding overcame poor shooting as the Owls improved to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10.
LaKeisha Eaddy led Temple with 17 points and five assists. Eaddy also tallied four steals to move into sixth place on the all-time list at Temple with 213. She also needs just 17 more points to hit the 1,000-point mark in her career. Kristen McCarthy and Qwedia Wallace scored 10 points apiece for the Owls, and Jasmine Stone led all players with 11 rebounds.
McCarthy scored the first five points of overtime to put Temple ahead, and Saint Joseph's failed to make a field goal in the extra period. The Hawks went 3-of-4 from the line but never got within closer than three in the final three minutes.
“This was a tough game for us,” said Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza. “We did a lot of things badly today, and got lucky to pull out the win. Saint Joe's is a tough team and they don't back down. It means a lot to come out with the win, but we have to play smarter basketball.”
Both teams tallied 21 turnovers, and while Saint Joseph's shot 31.6 percent from the field, Temple fared slightly worse at 29.4 percent. Rebounding gave the Owls the edge as they recorded 51 to the Hawks' 39, and finished with an 11-2 advantage in second chance points.
The first half saw three ties and two lead changes, with both teams struggling from the field. Saint Joseph's shot 34.6 percent and led by as many as three, while Temple only shot 32.3 percent but led by as many as seven.
The Owls were up 21-14 just under the three-minute mark, but the Hawks closed the half on a 10-5 run to trail by just two, 26-24 at the break.
Eaddy, making her return to the court after missing two games due to a concussion and broken nose, led all players at the half with eight points.
The score was tied twice more early in the first half before Saint Joseph's took a 31-30 lead at 16:29. Neither team scored for a three-minute stretch until Temple's BJ Williams scored a fast break layup off a steal and assist from Kristie Watkins-Day.
After one more lead by the Hawks, Temple took over again on a three-pointer by Eaddy, which she followed with a three-point play to put the Owls up by five, 38-33 at 10:53. Temple held or was tied for the lead until under three minutes remained in regulation.
Saint Joseph's Ashley Logue hit a trey with 1:50 on the clock to put her team up by two, but Wallace was fouled on Temple's next possession and made both shots at the line to even the score at 52-52. Both teams were scoreless the rest of the way, with the Hawks earning the final possession but getting off only a desperate shot attempt.
Three players scored in double figures for Saint Joseph's, led by Mariame Djouara and Ashley Prim with 13 points apiece.
Temple will continue A-10 play on the road next Tuesday, Jan. 19 at Rhode Island. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
