THE Bendigo Lady Braves have signed two-time WNBL Most Valuable Player and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Katrina Hibbert.Hibbert, who has recently come out of retirement, hopes to take the Lady Braves to the SEABL championship, which is one accolade the star player has not yet achieved in her impressive career.“I’ve got the WNBL championship, but not the SEABL championship,’’ Hibbert said.“I think that with the group of girls we have, we can do it.“I hope we do - I’m not a very good loser.’’The 32-year-old has played internationally, playing for the Seattle Storm in the WNBA as well as playing in the European League for Hungarian team Solohok and German team Wasserburg. In 2006, Hibbert was selected for the Opals Commonwealth Games team, which won gold against New Zealand’s Tall Ferns. She was also named in the WNBL’s All Star Five for two consecutive years while playing for the Bulleen Boomers.Hibbert’s flexibility on court will be a real bonus for the Lady Braves as she averages more than 20 points and 10 rebounds per game in the SEABL.Hibbert, whose family has roots in Bendigo, is looking forward to escaping the “hustle and bustle’’ of Melbourne when she comes to play for the Braves.“I’m going to enjoy playing in Bendigo,’’ she said.“It is so much less hectic than Melbourne.”And there is always so much support from the local community in a country town.’’Bendigo Lady Braves coach Lukas Carey says recruiting a player of the calibre of Hibbert is a major win for the Bendigo team.“Katrina is a quintessential professional,’’ Carey said.“To get an ex-WNBL and Commonwealth Games player will provide some great learning experiences for our younger kids.’’ Carey said Hibbert was the kind of player the team needed for success in the 2010 season.“We felt that we had one scorer and one middle-sized player missing, and now we’ve covered that,’’ he said.“Her (Hibbert’s) ability to play a number of positions as well as score from the inside and out makes her the perfect addition to any team.“We are going to have a very strong team.’’The Bendigo Lady Braves have also signed Gabrielle Richards, Eleanor Harring, Jane Chalmers and leadership pair Lauren King and Kelly Wilson for the 2010 season and look set to be the team to beat in the SEABL.
