Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, after leading the Catholic Church through one of its most tumultuous eras.

The Vatican has confirmed he died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, triggering nine days of mourning.

His death has also set in motion the process to assemble the conclave, the secret meeting to elect the new pope.
