Work has begun on an 80-storey skyscraper in London called the Shard, which will be Europe's tallest mixed-use building. This is an artist's impression of the structure.
The site of the building, in London Bridge Street, currently has the metal framework on show that will grown into the skyscraper, which is due for completion in May 2012. Parts of the foundations will be sunk to the same depth as Nelson's Column.
The development is run by Sellar Property Group with the backing of the State of Qatar, which is the majority shareholder in the development forming part of the £2bn London Bridge Quarter regeneration scheme.
The London Bridge Quarter will comprise two buildings, the Shard and London Bridge Place, covering a total of about 1.4m sq ft. The Shard will have 586,509 sq ft of offices along with a five-star hotel, restaurants, and residential apartments.
The master architect, Renzo Piano, designed the Shard as a "vertical city", as seen in this artist's impression. More than 45% has already been pre-let to the Shangri La Hotel and to Transport for London.
