Boomer O'Hea has coach in raptures

BULLEEN coach Tom Maher hailed forward Jenna O'Hea as Australian basketball's next woman superstar after the Boomers clinched the WNBL minor premiership in an extraordinary round.

Bulleen (18-1 record) clinched its first minor premiership as it followed a 93-67 crushing of slumping Logan (6-12) with an exciting 100-86 overtime victory over Townsville (12-6) on its North Queensland road trip.

Canberra (13-5) closed in on Sydney (14-5) with a thrilling 81-78 victory, also in overtime.

Canberra's superstar centre Lauren Jackson nailed a late game-breaking three-pointer in the extra period after her good friend Suzy Batkovic-Brown missed with the final shot in regulation.

In another cliffhanger, Bendigo (10-7) climbed into fifth spot above Adelaide with a dramatic 89-86 home win over the Lightning.

The Lightning (11-8) could still maintain its record of never having missed the play-offs as it bounced back with a 74-66 home win over Dandenong (5-14).

Townsville, which had won 20 straight home games, led 22-18 at quarter-time and spurned a chance at the death, when Aneka Davis missed a free-throw in the closing seconds.

The reprieved Boomers steamrolled the Fire 18-4 in overtime.

O'Hea, 22, sparked Bulleen's win with a monumental 36-point display, which had her coach in raptures. ''She's unbelievable, that's the next Australian superstar, she's going to be so big,'' Maher said. ''She's the best [to emerge] since Penny Taylor.''
