UAB women's basketball head coach

Audra Smith

that former University of Alabama forward

Jocelyn Shaw

is transferring to UAB.

The announcement came one day after we learned that the University of Alabama was blocking Justin Knox's possible transfer to UAB. Darien Knox, Justin's uncle, said in today's Kevin Scarbinsky column that Alabama officials told the Knox family that "the University of Alabama system has a rule or agreement in place that no student-athlete will transfer within the system."

Obviously, that is not the case for Shaw. The 6-foot Mobile LeFlore High graduate played in three games in her only season with the Crimson Tide's women's basketball team. She will sit out this season as a transfer student and will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2011-12 season.

Shaw averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds as a prep senior and led LeFlore to the Class 5A state championship.

“Jocelyn is going to be a strong inside presence for us,” Smith said. “She’s a smart, versatile player that will bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our team.”
