WMU women's basketball team struggles early in loss to Detroit

The Western Michigan University women's basketball team tripped up out of the gates Friday and couldn't catch up to Detroit en route to a 66-53 loss on the road.

An anemic start doomed the Broncos (1-2) as they trailed 32-17 at the half and shot just 25.9 percent (7-of-27). The Titans (3-0) forced 12 turnovers and converted them into 16 points in the first frame.

Taylor Manley and Ebony Cleary combined for over half of WMU's offense — finishing with 16 and 14 points, respectively. All 16 of Manley's points and 10 of Cleary's came in the second half as the Broncos upped their shooting percentage to 48 percent (12-of-25).

"We really cut down on our turnovers and made a comeback in the second half," WMU coach Tasha McDowell said. "The hole we dug ourselves was too big. I take responsibility for that. We just came out flat in the first half."

Yar Shayok was a force for Detroit, scoring a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Titans outrebounded WMU by a 42-29 margin.

The Broncos trimmed Detroit's lead to nine with 5:16 left in the game, but turned over the ball on three of the next four possessions to squash the rally.
