We will make a hand-written marquee of the schedule
(like one pictured on right)
to help:
37
(1) you can remember your time, and
38
(2) Burners know who to look for when they show up.

NOTES –A few notes about the process (more under Q&A below)
60
Note 1Sign up for as many slots as you want & come back and change your time too. Just make sure you either (a) show up or (b) crawl across the playa to take your name off the schedule (pictured above) so that folks aren't waiting for someone to do photographs.
61
Note 2Photographers & Conversationalists don't have to sign up together or already know each other. Just take a slot & another burner can sign up for the other slot. It's fun to meet new burners!
62
Note 3You can recruit friends to join. It often helps to have multiple conversationalists, so you can actually talk with people. At busy times it's good to have multiple photographers too.
63
Note 4We'll put up the final schedule (e.g. pictured above). Burners can check it for when to come have a portrait made.
64
Note 5The link below is a "Tip Sheet" for asking the question effectively.
65
http://j.mp/BM11tips
66
Note 6We will have Subject Releases for people to sign. They will be in a box next to the exhibit. People's answer to "wdydwyd?" goes on the reverse side of the Subject Release. There will be a mailslot in the wall of exhibit for you to put completed releases.
67
ROLES –What do you do?
68
69
PHOTOGRAPHER'S ROLE:CONVERSATIONALIST'S ROLE:
70
(a) Bring your camera & take portraits (video is also good). Digital is easier, but film is ok too. Experiment with shooting style. Only parameters: (i) answer "wdydwyd?" (ii) combine text w/image or video. Here's an idea: http://j.mp/SkinWriting (a) Your job is to explain the project & get people ready for the portraits (sort of an "intake" function)
71
(b) Make sure people fill out "Subject Releases." Copies will be provided, but you can help by printing out your own to bring (see below). Blank releases will be a travel lock on bin (combo: 808)(b) Ask people to write their answer BIG w/ a sharpie on a card that will be provided, and sign the Subject Release on the reverse side. Blank releases will be a travel lock on bin (combo: 808)
72
(c) Fill out the "Collaborating Artist" agreement(c) People often think hard about their answers, and you can have a conversation to help them dig deeper.
73
(d) Leave all Releases in the mail slot in a plastic bin nearby (it will be clearly marked).(d) It's tricky to get people to reach beyond cliched answers. You can help them do that. See the "Tip Sheet" under Note 5 (above).
74
(e) Upload images to http://wdydwyd.ning.com after you get home(e) It's fun to have a few friends do this with you b/c it allows you to have longer conversations with people (but you can do it solo no prob).
75
76
WHY – Why do it? Past Participants: Why did you collaborate?
77
A few reasons:Write something to let others know what they might like about collaborating on the project.
78
Radical Collaboration.I met so many wonderful people last year, it was one of the things I was most looking forward to for 2011.
– Jessalea Fleischman
It was so incredibly amazing to work with you last year. I can say without a doubt that the project changed my life.
– Erica Kuschel
79
Connect with Burners about
what motivates them.
It was the highlight of my playa experience & want to be able to participate again! :) It's a very fun, engaging, and thought provoking project. – Heather NicholsIt was such a great way to get involved at my first burn. I worked with great people. It changed the way I look at life.
-Scott R. Kline
80
Inspire deep reflection.I got so much out of it last year. People were open and wonderful. It was one of my favorite playa experiences in 2010 (that, and twirling fire for the first time in 30 years) - Green MonkeyI can tell you truly that what one takes away from this as an artist or a conversationalist is amazing.
– Mark Malitz
81
Be part of a growing group of Burners who have participated (2,000+)
82
Make portraits that'll be exhibited at Center Camp in future years.

Q&A – logistics +
85
QUESTION:ANSWER:
86
I'm having trouble accessing the link for the poll. - Robin Google Docs was being screwy! I changed it so people go to the form first, and then end up on this page. Can you go to http://j.mp/PlayaSignup and add your name & email.
87
Could you send a reminder of our scheduled commitments prior to playa departure? Sending to all people on the e-mail list, for example.Yes. Will do. Also, we will print out this schedule as it stands just before we leave for the playa (8/22) and will put it large on the exhibit so that Burners know who to look for when. You can make any changes with a sharpie on the playa at any time.
88
The link to the tip sheet is brokenThanks for catching. I'll fix any link that breaks (often since people are changing this spread sheet)
89
Is there a link to subject releases that we can print out or will those be available at center camp?We are planning to print some out on card stock and bring to have available. But, it would help a ton if some of you would be willing to print out some. They just need to be on card stock paper b/c the signs go on the back and they can't bleed through. We'll post a link up here & email it everyone who signs up.
90
Do you want us to bring instant camera and film or can I shoot digital? Or both. You can shoot digital, film, instant, video or whatever you want. The Polaroids we used to do on the playa also made a negative (Type 665 film), so we were able to bring the images home to post them online. Keep in mind that most people will want to find theirs on the wdydwyd site after the burn.
91
I'm totally keen on your project, I was photographed about 3 years ago by your crew. I would love to work on this from here(New Zealand) I hope to talk to someone about it @ the playaI'll put some times on the schedule (which will be on the exhibit itself) when I'll swing by the exhibit. I'd love to talk with folks about collaborating back home where they live! Lots of burners have done the project in communities, at school, work, festivals, Decom and elsehere.
92
second sign up pass how do i check the schedule later without re signing up...???http://j.mp/BMschedule
93
Can you explain the project in more details please. About the pics, where do we send them? Property of? that sort of thingI ask folks to upload the images to http://wdydwyd.ning.com after the burn (I'll remind collaborators after burn). And, you can upload them to any other site too. The images are your property. I will have a Collaborative Artist Agreement that grants me permission to use the images in conjunction with wdydwyd (but you are still the owner). We have releases for subjects to sign (which is the reverse side of their wdydwyd sign/answer). Subject releases are recommended by Burning Man for any photos that live beyond the playa.
94
what if you just want to be a part of the project without being a proctor? If you want to have a portrait made, that's fine. Just show up at the wdydwyd stand 2-7pm on Mon-Fri and look for a collaborating photographer & conversationalist.
95
I have unfortunately missed the deadline to register my camera under press, but was considering bringing my DSLR regardless for personal use. (Can I still shoot?)Yes, we've done this collaboration in the past. I'll double check with BM staff on how this should work, but we'll have something figured out. (see update to this answer below)
96
Registering cameras to work as "press" - Should we have done this already? And if not, are you suggesting that because this collaboration has been going on for multiple years it should be ok to not have our cameras registered? If you're participating in the wdydwyd project, you don't need a press pass. BM is cool with it b/c I'll have a Collaborating Photographers agreement between me and each photographer that covers it. (I'll send that form out to everyone in the sign up poll the week before the burn) Also, I'll give a list of photographers to Burning Man so they know who is shooting.
97
if all of the time slots are filled, will it still work if i come around, get some release forms and sign supplies and run off with a few people who want their photos taken? I mean i could be anywhere on the playa and explain your project and see if anyone wants their photos taken?Yes, absolutely. This is actually how we did it in the past. We just have lots of people who know wdydwyd and if they see the sign or a line of people, they'll want to do a portrait. We added a shoot schedule in 2010 b/c it was a way for burners to know where and when to show up if they want to do a portrait. Also, it enables more collaborators and the most photographers to participate. But, you can come by the wdydwyd spot, and you can find signs/releases you can take with you anywhere. More about this in an email to everyone who signs up.
98
I am really worried about bringing my cameras to the Playa because of the dust. It has been suggested by burner friends to set aside an hour a day to spend shooting nice widescreen shots with the big boy camera and take the smaller G10 around with me and put in a zip bag. I have looked into waterproof housing but it's way too expensive, but as my income relies on me having a working camera I am reluctant to bring the big boy out in case I get taken down by a dust storm!I bring my SLR, put it in a zip lock bag and only bring it out when it isn't dusty. When it's nice weather, it's no different than being at the beach on a perfect day. I also lug a small camera around with me everywhere. I keep it in a zip lock bad in my backpack when I'm not shooting though.
99
My ziplock deal. I got so frustrated not being able to see thru the bag I cut a holes in it and used a glue gun to seal the edges. Worked! http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurelmccubbin/3954726138/in/set-72157622455580304/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurelmccubbin/3954724598/in/set-72157622455580304/ Great idea! I do the same thing when it is dusty, but often it is so nice out that I take it out of the zip lock back. Thx for sharing resource!

(no question... just an idea -->)We've begun to experiment with people writing on their skin, but there aren't a huge amount of that kind.
Here are some examples: http://j.mp/SkinWriting

If this strikes anyone's interest, you might bring some body paint for people to use, although I bet people would use sharpies too. We'll only have medium sharpies.
