Invisible Art will bring together works from the past half century that explore ideas related to the invisible and the hidden, including work by some of the most important artists of our time as well as younger artists who have expanded on their legacy. Many of the works in Invisible seek to re-direct our attention towards the unwritten rules and conventions that shapes our understanding of art. Other works invoke invisibility to underscore the limits of our perceptual capacities or to emphasize the role of our imagination in responding to works of art. Still others use invisibility as a metaphor that relates to the suppression of information or the political disappearance and marginalization of social groups.

This exhibition is a refresher course in art well worth taking -- with the taste of a palate-cleansing sorbet. Perhaps its most important message is that that the magic and fear of art, as well as its intellectual and transformative capacity, comes from our mental or emotional engagement with it. When it really gets down to it, there is an awful lot of art that doesn't really need space-age buildings or luxe art fairs -- just a sensitive audience willing to engage in a mental dance with the artist. Invisible Art brings together works from the past half century that explore ideas related to the invisible and the hidden. The exhibition includes work by some of the most important artists of our time as well as younger artists who have expanded on their legacy.

From the amusing to the philosophical, there are works you can observe and others you can take part in, such as Jeppe Hein's Invisible Labyrinth. From Yves Klein's utopian plans for an 'architecture of air' to Robert Barry's Energy Field (AM 130 KHz) from 1968 - which encourages a heightened awareness of the physical context of the gallery- this exhibition span diverse aesthetic practices and concerns.


Many of the works in Invisible seek to direct our attention towards the unwritten rules and conventions that shape our understanding of art. Other works invoke invisibility to underscore the limits of our perceptual capacities or to emphasize the role of our imagination in responding to works of art. Joshua Chuang, Assistant Curator of Photographs, most recently organized the exhibition First Doubt: Optical Confusion in Modern Photography and authored its accompanying catalogue. He has written widely on modern and contemporary photography and has edited monographs on the work of Judith Joy Ross and Mark Ruwedel. He is currently at work on a traveling retrospective exhibition and related series of publications devoted to the work of the American photographer Robert Adams.

Doug Rickard (American, born 1968) studied United States history and sociology at the University of California, San Diego, before moving to photography. He has drawn on this background in research for his series A New American Picture, which focuses on places in the United States where unemployment is high and educational opportunities are few. On a virtual road trip, Rickard located these sites remotely using the Street View feature of the website Google Maps, which has mapped and photographed every street in the country. Scrutinizing the Google Maps pictures, he composed images on his computer screen, which he then photographed using a digital camera. The resulting pictures—digitally manipulated to remove the Google watermark and cropped to a panoramic format—comment on poverty and racial equity in the United States, the bounty of images on the web, and issues of personal privacy.

イギリスの女性写真家ジョー・スペンスは、階級、家族の拘束と格闘し、乳がん患者として医療の権威にたち向かい、フォトセラピーによる心身の解放を追求して、1992年に58歳でこの世を去った。労働者階級の家庭に生まれたスペンスは、若いときに写真関係の会社に勤めたことから、写真に関心をもつようになる。30代前半で写真館の肖像写真家となるが、写真家としての創造的歩みは、写真館をやめたときから始まる。イギリス女性解放運動のうねりのなかにいたスペンスは、女性である自分を縛るさまざまな枠組みに気づくようになる。たとえば、女性性、階級制度、家族制度といった枠組みである。そして、それらの枠組みを支えたり強化したりするのが写真表現であることにも気づく。拘束的枠組みから自己を解放するため、写真を使うセラピー手法を自分なりに案出していく。がん患者となってからはいっそう、写真の新しい撮り方、使い方を追究して、スペンスは最後まで走りつづけた。（翻訳者　萩原弘子）

ヘルベルト・アイメルト(1897~1972)は、西部ドイツ放送協会の電子音楽スタジオの設立(1951)者。その後シュトックハウゼンやカーゲルらに与えた影響も大きい、電子音楽の祖の一人といえる存在です。M-1の久保山愛吉の墓碑銘は、最初に久保山愛吉の死を悼む内容の詩が読まれ、その後、その肉声の音声を、テープ、アンプ、スピーカー、フィルターなどを通して電気的に変容させたものが流れるもの。語り手が発した言葉(=音)のみを素材として用いており、その他の外部音の録音素材などは一切使われていません。おそろしさすら感じさせる、圧倒的な仕上がりといえましょう。


「久保山愛吉~第五福竜丸」
1954年3月1日、ビキニ環礁で行われた水爆実験に、第五福竜丸(静岡のマグロ漁船)が遭遇し、船体および船員(23名)、捕獲した魚類が放射性降下物に被爆した事件。この船長が久保山愛吉氏で、この事件は世界に大きく報じられた。M-2の「6つのスタディ」は、1962年春に作曲されたもので、こちらの作品もまた、人があるテキストを朗読した音声を変容させていく作品。オーディオ的にかなり聴きごたえのある1枚です。

Product Description
Herbert Eimert (1897-1972) was a German music theorist, musicologist, journalist, music critic, radio producer and composer. Eimert, a fervent disciple of Arnold Schonberg, felt strongly that his mentor's 12-tone ideal could be best achieved through the use of electronics. This classic electronic music reissue from Wergo's influential Studio Reihe series features Epitaph, Eimert's powerfully emotional spoken-word based tribute to Japanese fisherman Aikichi Kuboyama, who died of radiation poisoning incurred when first hydrogen bomb was tested in the South Pacific in 1954. The pairing, Eimert's Sechs Studien, was composed immediately after Epitaph. Derived from the same source material, the studies use only abstract musical sounds in a spectrum where the spoken word can no longer be recognized.
