Producer Nicolas Gonda, who last year co-founded Tugg, a digital platform that allows people to choose movies to play in their local theaters, will deliver the keynote address at the American Film Market’s Marketing Conference on Nov. 11 in Santa Monica, Calif.
“I’m looking forward to joining such esteemed colleagues from around the world to discuss many of the important issues shaping our industry,” said Gonda.
Tugg, launched at South By Southwest in 2012, is a crowdsourcing platform that allows people to curate movie screenings by getting their friends to sign up and provide a credit card to a local movie theater in advance. They also work with companies to host special events, including some Hollywood majors who have used it to create sneak previews and test screenings of upcoming movies.
Tugg offers a long list of titles it has cleared with studio and independent distributors and had deals with theaters covering about 75 percent of the U.S. Screenings typically are set up on days or evenings during the week when the theater otherwise would have low attendance.
Gonda also produced movies for Terrence Malick and others. He worked with Malick on The Tree of Life and To The Wonder, and has two upcoming features with the director: Knight of Cups and an untitled feature set in the Austin, Texas, music scene.
He is also producer of The Better Angels, the directing debut of A.J. Edwards, which stars Diane Kruger, Jason Clarke and Brit Marling.
Gonda lives in Austin where Tugg is based.
The American Film Market, produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance, takes place this year Nov. 6 to 13.
