I have more experience then I am willing to admit in the management side of the corporate world. I have been a new manager, trained new managers and mentored many more managers over a number of years. Always a teacher at heart, I loved it, all of it.
However, not everyone who ventures into the world of supervising people are prepared for all the challenges they will face. Figuratively speaking, just when a manager or supervisor think they have it all figured out, something will hit them square in the face and that new experience will, quite literally, take their breath away. The fact is managing a staff of different individuals is not something that anyone will ever get completely figured out. Human nature will not allow that to happen. If a person is lucky, they will get comfortable with being uncomfortable, all the time. One thing is for sure, it is the hardest job anyone could ever ask for or imagine. I have often said, we will learn more about ourselves in the role of a manager then we will ever learn from our subordinates, and that is a ton.
One of the things few rarely talk about is the emotional toll on a manager or supervisor and the personal knowledge one gains about themselves from the whole experience. Many times, these experiences can be challenging and painful and will often result in a person reconsidering their desire to be a supervisor. Some will choose to leave the opportunity altogether because of the difficulty of managing through the emotional mire they find themselves.
This page is dedicated to the brave souls that venture, knowingly or unknowingly, into the world of supervising people. I will write a story in a series of posts that describe the various stages a new supervisor goes through and the “ah ha” moments, learnings and difficulties they face as they maneuver through the challenges that are presented to them along the way.
