SACRAMENTO—

The government shutdown is slamming the door on some families looking to a purchase a home.

“We were hoping that September, October would really jumpstart our market. Now with the government shutdown, we’re seeing even more slowing,” said Robert Turriatta with Vitek Mortgage Group.

Many people who were in the market for a new home have now decided to wait.

“People are definitely worried. Consumer confidence is really going to wane, and that’s what really sells homes,” Turriatta said.

And as those who want to buy know, getting a loan could be more difficult.

“We’re having a problem obtaining USDA case numbers, and that’s going to affect our rural customers in the outlying areas of Sacramento County, Placer County, Yolo County,” Turriatta said.

If the government shutdown lasts another few weeks, FHA and VA loans could also be affected.

Buying a HUD home right now is also a nightmare for low income buyers. Changing ownership requires government services that have been furloughed.

“We can’t credit quality them, can’t get them qualified for any reason,” Turriatta said.

The government shutdown could also affect how much you get for your home: if fewer people are able to purchase your house, that could affect how much you’re going to get.
