Rian Johnson, the director of what many consider to be Breaking Bad‘s most powerful episode, will next helm a feature script by Vince Gilligan, that show’s celebrated creator — and Will Ferrell is set to star. It all sounds too good — and a little too strange — to be true. But it’s happening, albeit one time only, at the upcoming Austin Film Festival.

Ferrell will play a man with split-personality disorder whose two sides land on far ends of the political spectrum at a staged reading of Gilligan’s unproduced screenplay 2 Face, hosted by AFF’s Screenwriters Conference on Sunday, Oct. 27. Also participating are Mad Men‘s Linda Cardellini and Thomas Haden Church.

Gilligan joins Jonathan Demme, screenwriter Callie Khouri and Barry Josephson as special honorees at this year’s 20th anniversary festival. They’ll be joined by the just-announced winner of the 2013 Extraordinary Contribution to Filmmaking award, which will be presented to Susan Sarandon at the annual awards luncheon held at the Austin Club on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Also appearing at AFF this year is Elaine May, who’ll present her 1971 comedy A New Leaf, which she wrote, directed and starred in opposite Walter Matthau. The opening night screening will feature the U.S. premiere of The Art of the Steal, a heist film starring Kurt Russell and Matt Dillon. On closing night, which coincides with Halloween, the fest will host the U.S. debut of All Cheerleaders Die, which had its world premiere last month in Toronto.
