James Cameron will be the recipient of the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ filmmaker award at the 61st Golden Reel Festival, the organization said Friday.
“James has always pushed technology forward to new heights to fulfill his creative vision,” said MPSE president Frank Morrone in a statement. “His films have set box-office records. Titanic and Avatar, which he wrote, produced, directed and edited rank as the two highest-grossing films of all time. I hope that you will join us for a great evening as we celebrate Mr. Cameron’s achievements and contributions to the art of filmmaking.”
EARLIER: Ang Lee to Be Honored by Sound Editors
The director’s sci-fi epic Avatar, which claimed three Oscar wins at the 82nd Academy Awards ceremony in 2010, was nominated in sound editing and sound mixing categories. Three sequels to the blockbuster were announced by 20th Century Fox in July, with the first title expected to debut in theaters in December 2016.
Life of Pi director Ang Lee was the recipient of the MPSE award last year. Previous honorees include Gale Anne Hurd, Steven Spielberg and producer Brian Grazer.
The Golden Reel Festival is set to be held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites on Feb. 16, 2014.
