Women’s Basketball Receiving National Attention

Even though the official season has yet to begin, the NC State Women’s basketball team is already garnering attention from coaches across the nation. In the most recent USA Today/ESPN Top-25 preseason poll, the Wolfpack notched a total of 11 votes from the panel of 31 Division I head coaches.

Head coach Kellie Harper looks to get an experienced Wolfpack team rolling early, in hopes of rebounding from a 13-17 record last year which was only the fifth losing season in program history (dating back 35 years). When asked why she picked NC State, and how long it will take to seriously contend for championships, Coach Harper responded with this:

“I’ve had opportunities to leave [Western Carolina] before, but the fact of the matter is that I felt like we could go to a Final Four here. That’s a dream of mine: to coach a team to a Final Four. I think we could be competing for championships in three or four years. Does that mean we won’t win before then? No.”

The Lady Wolfpack rolled last Monday night with a balanced 87-44 exhibition win over North Greenville University, a game in which 11 different players tallied 14 or more minutes in the victory. On Friday, November 13 the team will play host to Florida International in the Raleigh Sheraton Wolfpack Invitational. The game will kick-off the official season at 8 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. The first game will feature Vermont and Western Michigan at 6 p.m.
