LONDON – The remaining members of British comedy group Monty Python are set to gather for a press conference here Thursday, in which they are tipped to announce some kind of reunion project.
A live show — which fans have long predicted — tour, film or other creative project would be the first full-time collaboration in three decades for the surviving members of the troupe.
An invite for a London press event on Thursday was sent to reporters early Tuesday and was labeled “Monty Python Press Conference.” “John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin invite you to join them,” it said, listing the names of the troupe’s members.
No further details were immediately available about what they would discuss, but social media lit up with expectations of a reunion project or projects.
The Sun tabloid, part of Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corp, on its front page Wednesday ran a story with the headline: “Monty Python Flies Again.” It said the troupe had agreed to a reunion but didn’t go into full details.
And Cleese tweeted: “Monty Python is set to be a flying circus all over again.”
The comedy group is known for TV sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus, which BBC America has aired in the U.S. Their film work includes Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) and Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979).
Released in 1983, Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life was the final full-time collaboration of all six original Monty Python members before the death of Graham Chapman from cancer in 1989.
Rumors of a reunion have regularly surfaced in the past.
The remaining members in 2005 attended the world premiere of musical Spamalot, based on Holy Grail. In 2009, they attended a 40th anniversary event in New York. The troupe also performed Python material at the Aspen Comedy Festival in 1998.
