WSJ: David Henry Hwang Honored at Steinberg Playwright Awards

David Henry HwangPlaywright, David Henry Hwang, was honored at the Steinberg Playwright Awards (also known as the “The Mimis”) earlier this week.

Hwang received the Distinguished Playwright Award of $200,000. He had originally received the award last year but due to the cancellation of the ceremony because of Hurricane Sandy, he was honored at this year’s awards ceremony.

Hwang is best known for his play “M. Butterfly,” which he spoke about at the ceremony as having, “limped into New York City,” in 1988 after struggling in a previous production in Washington, D.C. He credited the play’s success to the generous support of producers and said the experience taught him that playwrights depend heavily on the generosity of others.

Hwang’s new play, “Kung Fu,” will be produced at the Signature Theatre Center in the spring.
