    nice tablet
I got the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 yesterday. Overall, I am more than happy with this. Previously, I used a Toshiba netbook. It died on me. I took out the hard drive and am using it as an external hard drive on my desktop. The only previous experience I've had with a tablet is my Nook. The Galaxy is far better. While both tablets use the same Android operating system, the Galaxy allows you to download apps from the Android store. The Nook does not. Any apps you use on the Nook, you must pay for and the choices aren't very good.I downloaded a couple of free apps. One app allows me to scan a document and store it on my Galaxy. There is a front and rear facing camera. I downloaded Skype. The resolution on the two cameras isn't as good as the hd camera on my desktop but the portability of the Galaxy should make for a more rewarding Skype experience. With the desktop, I am limited to just a few feet where my desk is.The Galaxy has gps, which seems to be very accurate. Not only have I checked out gps locations on the maps but also I have taken a few pictures which give the locations. If you like to take photos, then the Galaxy Tab 2 isn't for you. The front facing camera is only 3.2 Megapixels, the rear is only vga quality. There is no zoom. There is no flash. The Galaxy has a very interesting feature. When you compose an email, you can speak the words and the Galaxy will input your words into the email. I tried this several times. Even with my Bostonian accent it accurately input my words. The only other experience was with my cell phone. My words were interpreted as a bunch of gibberish. One interesting thing which results from not having completely read the manual is that sometimes I am completely taken by surprise while experimenting with a new device. There is a feature that allows you to speak the search item in google. A google search page comes up with all the relative search items. I wanted to find out how my favorite baseball team was doing. I spoke the words "Red Sox" and a female voice came back to me and said "The Boston Red Sox are tied in the top of the eighth inning 3-3 with the Baltimore Orioles".Another thing the Galaxy has that I have been using a lot already is the Bluetooth feature. I have already paired the Galaxy with my cell phone and desktop. I have transferred some photos and documents. This review is meant to be a "first impression" review. I will post an addendum in a few weeks and maybe a picture or two.UPDATE: 9/2/13I have had several days to play with this. I still give it five stars. I find that it is very user friendly. It can do all sorts of good computer things. I already downloaded several apps that I have used in the past (Words with Friends, Nook, Skype, The Weather Channel, Pandora, and Facebook). I find that the plusses far outweigh the negatives with this tablet. It is fast and responsive.I had an issue with the fact that the music player wouldn't close. It wasn't just me - several owners complained about the same thing. The issue was resolved when I downloaded the latest OS ( V4.2.2). Now there is a "close" option on the music player. The only thing that annoys me right now is the fact that I keep inadvertently press the volume key or the power key and either turn off the tablet or mute the volume. It would be nice if those keys were placed in such a way that inadvertent activation of these keys was impossible.

I love this tablet! I purchased two right after the new year and they have been going strong since. Maybe that seems crazy, but I've heard some horror stories about off-brand tablets becoming crap within a few weeks. This tablet has a lot of internal memory and runs android. The battery keeps its charge well, and I haven't had any issues with playback of movies or music, and it plays apps perfectly. I have probably downloaded approximately 20 apps and the system hasn't slowed at all. The WiFi works well, when I take it away from home and come back, it is almost instantaneously picking up the signal. It almost never loses the connection, even when my ps3 or my laptop do.

If you are looking to buy a tablet and you aren't sure which one to buy; decide what you want it to do first. Are you working or playing? Are you familiar with android or mac? Android is super easy to use, and the app store is very extensive, with tons of free apps. You need to decide how much you want to spend, long term. Apple products may be top-of-the-line, but they are priced accordingly, and so are their warranties, if you want one. Even after your initial purchase, you will still have to buy a case, possibly you might need a memory card, or a replacement power cord, and you might not want to pay $50-100. If you decide you want to go with android, now you have a variety of choices. Your first consideration should be WHICH version of android you want. This Samsung runs 4.1.1, but I've seen lots of off-brand that only have 2.1, and that OS came out a few years ago. The higher the number, the newer the OS and the better your tablet will work, and run apps especially. I don't recommend the 2.1, I used to have it on my phone and you can't save apps to external storage. At the very least, look for 2.3. There's also the kindle to consider, they run a certain android OS that has been modified for Amazon, and has exclusive rights on new adobe flash software. This is a definite perk for the kindle, but it was still out of my price range. Plus, while it can be so upsetting to miss out on the random flash ads (haha), the Samsung still plays videos from the internet just fine, as well as several different kinds of video files downloaded from a computer to the external card.

After looking at the OS, you need to decide how much internal memory you want. The literal total for the Samsung is 4.49 gb. Of which I still have 2.90 gb free. Now, I am using 1 whole gb for apps, but I mostly play games and they can be large, and when you have this much memory, you don't have to constantly move them to your external card. I could potentially get a lot of that space back if I wanted to. Having enough internal memory is VERY IMPORTANT; you will want to throw your tablet in the street and crush it with your car if you don't have enough. It will constantly tell you that the storage is low, and you won't be able to even update your current apps. I would say, depending on your usage plans, you will want at least, AT LEAST, 2 gb, but even that's on the low side. If you are going to read, play games, and be on the internet a lot, you will want more.

Next, decide how big you want this sucker to be. I love this 7 inch tablet, and I wouldn't want a larger one. Yet again it depends on what you want it for. I like that I can just throw this in my purse or school bag. The 10 inch ones are too big for my tastes.

After these major considerations, here's the other thing about tablet buying that you may want to think about. My girlfriend received an off brand tablet for Christmas, and we looked, and looked, and looked for a good case for it. Nada. There are so many different tablets out now, a saturated market, while the accessories are about as easy to find as water in the desert; if you don't have a Kindle, an iPad, or a Nook. This may sound crazy, but in the end, what made me get this tablet was the fact that I could get a good, solid case made specifically for it, at a reasonable price. I was not going to spend several hundred (I bought 2, remember) dollars on tablets, only to break mine within a week. I'm a huge klutz, so I have to think ahead. This is a great tablet, I highly recommend it!

Ok, the title of my review might be a little extreme but I stick by it. Anyone considering a Nook or Kindle should give this tablet a long, hard look. For an entry level, low cost tablet it has a lot of features the purpose built readers leave out. Not the least of which is this tablet is not tied to Barnes & Noble or Amazon. With this tablet you can get content from anywhere you want. Also, the Samsung has a GPS, front and rear cameras and a memory card slot. I believe the Nook has a memory slot too but the Kindle does not. The Samsung also has an IR blaster for controlling your home theater.

My only other Android device is my nearly 2 year old Motorola Droid X phone and this tablet makes my phone feel very inadequate in almost every way. The tablets screen is bright, crisp and clear and it is very responsive with little to no lag. I believe that this screen has a higher pixel density than many of the 10" tablets as it is nearly the same resolution as the larger tablets in a smaller screen. I was holding out for a high res 10" tablet but decided to jump on this one because I was tired of waiting. I am not disappointed. It will be interesting to see if I end up preferring the 7" tablet after I use it a while. It is very light, small and portable and the screen real estate is really quite usable.

      Universal Remote:
I just got my tablet last night and setup my home theater easily. I am disappointed with the interface of the supplied remote app though and will look around for a better version. But at least the tablet provides the ability to do it. To be fair though, I did not spend a lot of time with it so it may be better than I think.

      Kindle Reader:
The Kindle reader app is very nice as the text is sharp and it turns pages very quickly. I think anyone coming from an e-ink based reader will enjoy using this tablet as a reader as well. My wife has the e-ink Kindle and has often wanted a back lit reader instead of using a book light. This screen will not be as readable outdoors though but I think most of my and my wife's reading is indoors so there is always a trade off.

      Streaming Music:
I have not tried other media yet other than Pandora radio. You do get a little hiccup in the audio if you are surfing data intensive apps like Google Maps while you are streaming music. This may be the result of my pitiful DSL connection at home though. Will have to try it on a faster broadband connection sometime to see.

      Maps:
Google Maps looks great on this device. Fortunately this tablet has a GPS chip so location based services/mapping are possible. It is a great size for mapping and once I get a 4G phone with WiFi ability, I will try it out as a navigation device. Hopefully Samsung will come out with a car dock for this tablet. Google Streetview is very nice on this tablet as well.

      Gmail:
The Gmail app is extremely nice on this tablet. Even in portrait mode you get the folder list down the left side and your email in the currently selected folder displayed on the right. On my phone, you only get one folder at a time.

      Google Reader:
I use Google Reader as my RSS app and it is very fast on the tablet compared to my phone. I go cross-eyed staring at my phone for very long but I can tell from my limited use of the reader on the tablet that the tablet will be great. The reader is really one of my most used apps and a big reason I wanted a tablet.

      Facebook:
What can I say, Facebook is much nicer on a tablet than on the phone.

      Real Estate Apps:
I am currently in the market to buy a house so I have the Realtor.com and Zillow apps. Both are much nicer on the tablet than on the phone. The photos on the Realtor app are much larger than what Zillow provides though which is odd. Photos on the phone are ok, but are hard to tell much about. With the tablet, the photos are much more usable.

I may come back and add more to this review as I use the tablet more but in my 1 evening with it so far I can tell that I am going to love this tablet.

      **Update 5/9/2012**
I got a chance to play with the tablet some more and have a few more observations to add.

      YouTube:
YouTube looks great on this tablet. It will seamlessly flip from portrait to landscape without stopping the video. I personally think the YouTube app has a much better UI than the internet webpage.

      Speakers:
The speakers are on the bottom of the tablet when the tablet is in portrait position. You have to watch that you don't rest it on your lap when listening to something using the speakers. If you turn it to landscape position, you have to watch that you don't cover the lower speaker with your hand. I found that if you hold the tablet with your fingers and cup the corner with the speaker it actually helps project the sound to you. I don't know where else they could put speakers as almost anywhere they are you will have to watch you don't cover them when you hold them so I won't complain about it.

      Games:
What can I say, Angry Birds is awesome on a tablet. Words With Friends is nice as well. I haven't tried other games yet but expect them to look much better than they do on a phone.

      7" vs. 10" tablet:
I don't know what to think about the size yet. I was trying to hold out for a high res 10" tablet that Samsung is rumored to be working on but got tired of waiting. I am really enjoying the light, small form factor of this 7" tablet though. So now I am not sure if I will want a 10" tablet or not. My brother has an iPad and that thing is a brick compared to this tablet.

      WiFi:
I am a little worried about the people complaining about WiFi issues. So far mine has been working fine. It is indicating the same signal strength that my phone and laptop show. Maybe the problem is hit and miss but I hope if there is a real problem it is something a software/firmware update can resolve. But so far I have no complaints.

      Battery Life:
I charged the tablet overnight and took it off the charger in the morning. I didn't use the tablet until I got home about 11 hours later. It was at 98% charge so it only drained 2% in 11 hours of no use. I used it for nearly 3 hours and it dropped to 66%. So 3 hours was about 1/3 of the battery life. That should translate to about 9 hours of battery life. I could turn the GPS off since it isn't needed most of the time, I also saw a tip about having it turn the WiFi off when in sleep mode and I have manually set the screen brightness to around 25% which is plenty bright indoors. Overall, I think it is going to have pretty decent battery life. I should get about 3 good evenings or a full day on a charge.

      **Update 5/21/2012**
I have lived with the tablet for a couple weeks now and have a few more observations.

      Screen Sharpness:
I got to compare it with my brother's iPad 2 this weekend and the screen on the Samsung is much, much sharper than the iPad. In fact, my dad's Nook was much sharper than the iPad with the Samsung being sharper than the Nook. The difference was amazing.

      Browser Speed:
I was completely happy with the browsing speed of the Samsung until I compared it to the iPad. The iPad was much, much faster. Not sure why, but it is very noticeable. I installed the beta version of Google Chrome and it appears to be better than the built in browser but still not as fast as the iPad. But like I said, I was happy until I found out there was better.

      Connection Issues:
I have observed the connection problem some people are reporting. If you hold the bottom left corner, the reception does drop down. As soon as you left off, it goes up 1 bar. But I also found out that my router was not operating at full strength. I had the old standby Linksys WRT54G but recently upgraded to an ASUS RT16N. As soon as I did, I noticed my cell phone and laptop were not showing nearly as strong reception as before. I am running Tomato on the router and discovered that you can turn up the signal strength. By default, Tomato is dialed back. My nearest neighbor is a quarter mile away so I dialed up to full strength. That upped my reception by 1 bar when covered and uncovered. So now I have better signal strength, even when I cover the antenna. I am not worried as I don't lose connection and it is showing a similar signal strength as my phone and laptop.

      Overall, I love this tablet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for reading offline material or doing online research
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2012
I bought the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 inch after reading various online reviews (outside Amazon).
There were abount two reviews where the reviewers said the device was not as powerful and questioned why Samsung would develop such a product. There was one review which really appreciated the device.
I tend to agree that the device might be under powered for any potential future upgrades, but it comes with the latest Android OS right now and should last at least 2 years.

My main requirements for buying the device were:
      - Reading books & PDFs whilst offline (e.g. on a plane).
      - Reading Word documents.
      - Reading email.
      - Basic web surfing/researching.
i.e. a lot of reading, which doesn't require much CPU power once it's loaded.

I chose between the Amazon Kindle devices and this Samsung device mainly due to the smaller profile. I didn't want something that was heavy to hold and didn't need much space in luggage etc.
I have good eyesight and find reading on small displays easy.
My thinking was that Samsung make LCD screens for TVs/screens and they have always been good quality.

I have found that the screen size is just about right to read from.
The display is very bright and although it is quite glossy, I can read it in my conservatory where I can't see a regular laptop screen.
The device feels well made and not flimsy. The back plastic has a metalic look to it and it feels solid. It doesn't bend or press in anywhere like a hollow plastic device would.
The weight is about right but it could become tedious after 90 minutes. It's as heavy as a large hardback. It's probably the same weight as the Steve Jobs biography, which I hold with both hands when reading.

I bought mine with a 32GB micro-SD card to go in it.
The Ice Cream Sandwich OS is much better than older Android versions as it now supports entire device encryption or just SD card encryption. I may choose to just encrypt the SD card, which will prompt for a password on boot up before decrypting it.
This is good if you read company related documents on the device.

Although some of the reviews complained of bloat-ware, there's not that much and Samsung have limited your exposure to it.
As mentioned in one of the reviews there is a neat way of flicking between apps using a rotating menu bar. Never seen that before and works quite well.
There's one key app that I may make use of, the ability to remotely track and wipe the device. This is provided by Samsung and you will need to register a Samsung account.

I've not used the camera yet or made a video. My wife has a professional camera so I wouldn't even dream of presenting pictures from the camera on this device.

When you press the power button once, the device goes to sleep (screen off) but I think the Wi-Fi must still be active.
I've left the device in this state overnight (~9 hours) and it only lost ~8% of the battery power.
When you long-press the power button, you get the option to reboot or power-off. A full restart feels like it takes approx 20-30 seconds.

The device comes with the Chrome web browser which works really well at rendering most web pages I've been too.
The pinch and zoom works fantastically and is really quick and responsive.

Overall, if you like Android and a 7inch screen is OK for you, you'll like this device if you need it for the same reasons I bought it.
I feel that the price (I paid ~£200) is good for a device like this considering a tiny mobile phone with Android costs £300-£400.

I've just paid £30 for a nice Proporta case to protect the device when it's in my luggage. If the screen gets busted, then the device is useless.

I have always wanted the Samsung tablet. I was so surprised about it's quality. Movies converted into mp4s play perfectly with HD quality. You can change the language from Japanese to English. You can't go wrong with this. If you unit doesn't come with flash just download the latest version for Android from Adobe archives.

      5.0 out of 5 stars Galaxy tab2

5.0 out of 5 stars やはり定番のタブレット
Reviewed in Japan on August 11, 2012
