Silly premises do not spell disaster; boil down Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds into a one sentence logline for concrete evidence. So while the synopsis for director Eugenio Mira‘s Grand Piano, a cat and mouse thriller staged at a classical piano concert, may elicit raised eyebrows, the film’s first trailer speaks for itself. Death threats are terrifying, regardless of circumstances.
Elijah Wood stars as Tom Selznick, a talented pianist of his generation who stopped performing in public because of crippling stage fright. Years after a performance gone awry, he returns for a comeback concert. It’s during that performance that he finds a note embedded into his sheet music: “Play one wrong note and you die.” Not even stage mothers are that overbearing.
Reviewing from the London Film Festival earlier this year, THR complimented Grand Piano’s oddball sensibility and pulpy twists and turns, suggesting it had “just enough stylistic swagger to excuse its utterly preposterous plot.”
Grand Piano costars John Cusack, Tamsin Egerton, Kerry Bishé and Alex Winter. Magnolia Pictures will release the film on iTunes/On Demand Jan 30, 2014 and in theaters March 7, 2014.
