And God Cried, Too: A Kid's Book of Healing and Hope Paperback – September 1, 2002

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

Little Angel Mike

is a guardian-angel-in-training. He doesn't understand how God can let bad things happen in the world. Whether it's the tragic events of September 11, 2001, or the loss of a beloved pet, shouldn't God be able to stop the bad things? Big Angel Gabe is a wise old angel, and it's his job to help answer Little Angel Mikey's tough questions and to guide him through the mystery of suffering and into a hopeful place. In a nonpreachy, accessible manner, the message of God's great compassion and our ability to bear even the greatest burdens is offered here with a gentle wisdom.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Similarly, Rabbi Marc Gellman (he and Monsignor Thomas Hartman together are known as the God Squad) offers stories for sustenance in And God Cried, Too: A Kid's Book of Healing and Hope. The collection stars Mikey, a "guardian-angel-in-training" and his teacher, "chief angel," Gabe. Each chapter is based on one of Mikey's questions ("What if nothing makes any sense?" and "What can I do when I'm afraid?" among them); Gellman's "Things to think about" section sums up each chapter.

From Booklist

Gr. 2-5. Rabbi Gellman, familiar to many from his writing and media partnership with Monsignor Thomas Hartman (the "God Squad"), here tackles some enormously important questions about faith that adults sometimes find difficult to answer for themselves--let alone talk about with children: Why doesn't God intervene before bad things occur? What happens to us when we die? Does God love some people more than others? As usual, Gellman is both reassuring and compassionate. The problem here is mostly one of audience. The first part of each discussion, a made-up story about an angel in-training getting his spiritual education, seems best suited to young children who are listening rather than reading on their own (the exception being a tale about the horrors of September 11). The follow-up, "Things to Think About," in which Gellman expands on the tales, adding depth and context, is clearly written for middle-graders. Using contemporary stories fashioned around middle-grade children (as he has done in past books) might have helped bring subject matter more in conjunction with audience. That said, this is nonetheless an empathetic, hugely thought-provoking book that begs for parent-child sharing and discussion. Stephanie Zvirin

"And God Cried,Too" is a child-sized, simple explanation of the questions we encounter as we face the hard times of life that come to us all. Mikey, a small angel works to receive his halo, observing and learning with help from Gabe, his tutor. As Mikey's skills increase, the reader finds ideas & skills to consider as they face similar situations.

As the faith community nurse at my church, I have given copies to children and adults. I, myself find that when times are tough for me, I can sometimes comprehend best through a book like this written for children. Somehow the experiences translate into my life faster, helping me begin "living through" and beyond whatever I'm facing. After that I can gain more as I read resources written for adults.

I wish the publisher would re issue the paperback version of this very insightful book. It seems to be a nearly perfect beginning for explaining very hard realities, leading springboards for discussion & possible understanding for those of every faith.

I read this book to my children 20 years ago. And was reminded of it again. I just ordered it for my grandbabies. Thank you Rabbi Gelman for such a beautiful book.

Excellent writer directed to children’s very serious questions. Myself — Having been in front of a 4th grade class on 9/11, when a knock on my classroom door came and I was quietly told to hold the class from returning to their homeroom and to carefully explain something had happened to 2 buildings in NY City that they will hear more about when they get home, etc. soon were back in their homeroom and it was dismissal time!

Our son is dealing with the death of a young person. This book is sweet and uplifting. It is geared for very young kids, but even older kids will like it. My son is 11, but even a 5 or 6 year old could have this read to them. If you have a tragedy that your child is dealing with, finding this out-of-print book is worth the effort.

My husband died when our kids were 5,6, and 6. Six months later this book was recommended. Not only do the kids enjoy the stories and humor, they are also grasping complex life realities in the nurturing hand of a loving merciful and empathetic God. It has spurred amazing conversations about our loss and what to do with it. I am grateful to the authors for this gift.

Not bad for an older child. I'd hoped it would be more appropriate for a younger audience.

Read this to my two grandchildren after their Poppa died and it gave them an enormous amount of
comfort - answering many of their precious questions. They are 7 and 4 years of age.

Rabbi Gellman is a true angel here on earth!
