The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) will, for the second consecutive year, boost the number of nomination slots for its documentary section, this time from three to five for the next edition of the British Academy Film Awards, organizers said on Monday, Dec. 9.
The extended opportunity for documentary films was unveiled on the same day that the British Academy revealed that 275 films have been entered this year for consideration by its 6,500-plus voting members.
Last year’s BAFTA film award for best documentary went to Searching For Sugar Man, a film about the lost and found cult rock and roll singer Rodriguez, which also won an Oscar.
The first round of voting opens on Dec. 11, with the full list of nominations scheduled for release on Jan. 8, 2014.
BAFTA also reminded members that there will also be six nominations in the outstanding British film category.
The EE British Academy film awards will be dished out on Feb. 16, 2014 at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.
Stephen Fry returns to host this year’s ceremony, which will be broadcast exclusively on BBC One in the U.K. and in all major territories around the world.
