One non-profit organization which has been in the forefront of citizen preparedness is the Home Safety Council. Under the leadership of Meri-k Appy, the Council has developed a number of creative and user-friendly preparedness education programs. In this daily segment of “What Should We Tell The Public?” (for National Preparedness Month), Appy discusses the Council’s ‘Get Ready Freddie’ school-based preparedness curriculum.
As Appy points out, children are a crucial part of the ‘public’ that we should be ‘telling’ about preparedness. And in fact, knowledge, contrary to scaring them, actually can help them feel more secure. She underscores the importance of developing a partnership between parents, teachers and students if the nation is going to make real progress on preparedness. Behind her in the video, shot at the Council’s Washington’s office, is a a winning entry from its preparedness poster contest for third and fourth graders, Kids Prepare America.
