300: Rise of An Empire, the sequel to Zack Snyder‘s adaptation of the Spartan war comic by Frank Miller, will be released in movie theaters next year. Rise of an Empire, it turns out, is also adapted from a Miller comic — but don’t expect to see it any time soon.
ICv2 reports that no further work has been completed on Xerxes, Miller’s comic book sequel to the original 300 series, since 2011, citing the creator’s “Hollywood commitments” as the reason for the delay (Miller is co-directing Sin City: A Dame to Kill For with Robert Rodriguez, although that movie has been pushed back 10 months from its originally scheduled October 2013 date for reasons unknown).

According to an anonymous source within Miller’s publisher, Dark Horse Comics, the creator has completed two issues of a planned five for the series, with the work to date looking “outstandingly beautiful.” When it eventually appears, it’ll be interesting to see the ways in which the comic differs from its earlier adaptation.
300: Rise of an Empire, directed by Noam Murro, will be released March 7, 2014.
