Sundance Channel is exploring the divisive subject of gun control for its latest scripted project.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that the cable network is developing Cold Dead Hands, a National Rifle Association drama from journalist and Under the Dome writer Scott Gold and Tony Krantz‘s Flame Ventures.
Following Rectify, co-production Top of the Lake, acquisition The Returned and upcoming original The Red Road, the potential series would further bolster the AMC Networks channel’s big push into scripted programming.
Cold Dead Hands is described as a family drama set against the backdrop of the NRA and the ongoing debate over Americans’ right to bear arms. It focuses on the fictional Thibodeaux family, led by patriarch and NRA topper Trip.
Gold will pen the script and executive produce the project. A relative unknown in TV writing, the award-winning journalist has two episodes of Under the Dome to his credit. He’s been a Los Angeles Times staffer since 1999 and has covered a wide variety of issues.
Krantz’s EP credits include Sports Night, Felicity, 24 and, most recently, NBC’s Dracula. Flame Ventures’ Reece Pearson will serve as co-EP.
“The debate over gun violence and gun rights has many sides,” said Krantz, “and in order to help protect lives, promote gun safety and build a national consensus on the issues, we want to respect and understand all sides of this story.”
Krantz is repped by CAA. Gold is with Verve, Chris Davey of Media Talent Group and Jackoway Tyerman.
