The Attorney features Song Kang-ho in the role of an ambitious tax attorney who decides to represent an old friend in court. The actor has enjoyed a successful year with back-to-back hits. He appeared in 2013’s second- and third-highest-grossing films, Snowpiercer and The Face Reader, respectively.
The Suspect, an action film starring popular actor Gong Yu, came in second in the box office with 1.82 million admissions since opening on Christmas Eve.
The Suspect and The Attorney account for 69.1 percent of sales for homespun films. The two films, both greatly anticipated releases of the season, have added to local theater admissions, which recorded 200 million for the first time earlier this month. So far, Korean cinemas have sold 211.455 million tickets.
The British romantic comedy About Time retained third place from the previous week with 258,000 admissions over the weekend. French animation House of Magic was fourth, while The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which topped the box office from Dec. 13-15 despite distribution problems, ranked fifth.
