Just prior to Mitt Romney‘s concession speech in November 2012, there appeared to be a filmmaker in the room detailing the candidate’s stab at humor.
“By the way, someone have the number for the president?” asks Romney, who seems to have just accepted that he lost the election. The moment marks the beginning of the first trailer for the Netflix documentary Mitt, which promises a candid look at the Republican candidate.

The trailer also showcases a more humorous side of the politician. A scene of Romney ironing his crisp suit while he’s wearing it and another of the candidate joking about a losing presidential nominee being branded “a loser for life” bring some levity.
The documentary was written and directed by Greg Whiteley (Resolved, New York Doll), who has had access to the politician’s inner circle since the first time Romney began prepping for a presidential bid in 2006.
“Over the next seven years, I couldn’t believe I was filming inside rooms and situations I had no business being in,” Whiteley said in a statement earlier in December. “Now that I’ve finished, I couldn’t be more pleased to share this experience with audiences around the world through Netflix.”
The title will be available to stream on Netflix beginning Jan. 24. It will also debut the same month as part of the Sundance Film Festival’s Documentary Premieres lineup.
we’ve come to recognize and root for, but there’s got to be another side to him that we haven’t yet explored,” says Gilligan of the prequel.
