TORONTO — In the wake of Duck Dynasty‘s Phil Robertson being briefly suspended by A&E for an anti-gay rant, Canada’s Corus Radio has yanked Canadian radio shock jock Dean Blundell from the air following comments about a gay sexual assault trial.
“The Dean Blundell Show has been canceled, effective Jan. 6, 2014,” Corus Radio said Monday in a statement about Blundell, the morning host at radio station 102.1 the Edge.
Blundell and show producer Derek Welsman landed in hot water with Corus in September 2013 for joking on air about a court case that involved a man convicted of sex assaults after a visit to a Toronto bathhouse.
Welsman was the jury foreman in the trial and took part in Blundell’s controversial on-air discussion of the court case on Sept. 30, 2013.
“This is a trial of a few guys, some aggravated sexual assault, a couple of bathhouses, some lube, four Dutch clogs, a stuffed buffalo, a meter stick, stigmata of the anus,” Blundell said during the broadcast.
The Dean Blundell Show has previously run foul of Canadian censors as part of a voluntary code of conduct administered by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council.
Now Corus Radio has lost patience with Blundell and his co-hosts.
“With the start of the new year, Corus Radio will be taking 102.1 the Edge in a new direction in 2014. The station will return to a more music-based format showcasing the best in modern rock,” Dave Farough, general manager of Corus Radio Toronto, said in the statement.
