27/04/2012 16:26:00MichaelToddEducation and Learning. I haven't thought about the detail, but I am very interested in the difference between the education process that the church devised and that we have been following for hundreds of years - the "empty vessel", curriculum driven, mass production model - and the way in which human beings learn naturally, the one that Piaget, Montessori briefly touched on, a hard-wired, self driven, exploratory, multi-directional model.
I'm interested in the abortive attempt to apply these 'natural' principles in the 60's and 70's and the way the ensuing vacuum was filled with a systems led organisational model where children were way down the list of priorities, and both teachers and parents were sidelined from any meaningful contribution to their children's education, which became a political football. i would also want to filter in the views of the students to shed as much light on this knotty problem as possible.
To follow on from that, I am interested in the ways we might devise a learning system which is based on that more natural way we learn, but also pays some meaningful attention to skills children will need when entering the adult world. this would also be an ideal opportunity for students to really 'bottom out' what they thought was needed and come to terms with the way their own education has shaped their values, preference and prejudices - indeed their lives
Human Development
At the moment, this is hazier but it is something to do with the nature vs nurture argument, the amount of control we have to change our lives, the critical and problem solving skills that are needed - and that should have been part of our education to begin with.
It also involves the crucial elements of self discipline, self knowledge and self confidence, where these ingredients comes from and how they can be nurtured if they are missing.
During the early '90's i was part of Bradford's Teacher Appraisal Team, teaching teachers how to be the engine of their own development. Some of those principles would find their way into a course like this.

01/05/2012 15:40:49AlanGurbuttJust a suggestion. I am developing a suite of portable open source applications to help people with dyslexia, literacy difficulties, plannining and visual impairments. If disabled SSC students aren't entitled to DSA it could be a viable alternative and I'm willing to provide one to one support for the software. At the moment I'm trialing it in Mablethorpe and if the pilot is successful I can apply for a grant for USB pendrives for distribution across Lincolnshire. I just thought the assistive open source software sits comfortably with the free university model. Monthly
