Clay Pell, a potential Democratic candidate for governor of Rhode Island, said in a tweet Monday that he will make a "special announcement" on Jan. 28.

Pell, the grandson of the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell and the husband of figure skater Michelle Kwan, said the announcement would be made at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence.

He would face three other announced Democratic candidates in a primary: General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Todd Giroux, who ran as an independent in 2010. Ken Block and Cranston Mayor Allan Fung are running as Republicans.

Pell, 32, said in an exclusive television interview with NBC 10's Bill Rappleye last week that his experience in the Coast Guard, on the National Security Council and at the Department of Education gives him the credentials to be governor.

He also talked about how Rhode Island's economy needs to be linked to the global economy.

It would be his first run for public office.
