NEW YORK — The critically acclaimed musical Once, which leads this year’s Tony Award nominations with mentions in 11 categories, will kick off a U.S. tour in summer 2013, producers announced Monday.
Currently running on Broadway to strong business at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, Once was adapted by playwright Enda Walsh from the 2006 Irish independent feature, written and directed by John Carney, about the halting romance between a Dublin busker and a Czech musician. Fox Searchlight released the movie in 2007, following its Sundance premiere.
While the score by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova was excluded from Tony consideration under the ruling that only material originally written for the stage is eligibile, Once was nominated in almost all major categories.
That includes best musical, director (John Tiffany), lead actor (Steve Kazee), lead actress (Cristin Milioti), featured actress (Elizabeth A. Davis), book (Walsh), choreography (Steven Hoggett) and orchestrations (Martin Lowe), as well as for various design elements.
The musical also has been nominated for several honors from other theater-industry groups, including the Outer Critic Circle Awards, Drama League Awards and Drama Desk Awards. On Sunday, the show’s original Off Broadway incarnation at New York Theatre Workshop received three Lucille Lortel Awards (the industry’s leading Off Broadway prizes) including outstanding musical.
While no specific dates or destinations have yet been announced, the Once tour is being presented by The Road Company.
Lead producers on Broadway are Barbara Broccoli (of the James Bond franchise), John N. Hart Jr., Patrick Milling Smith, Frederick Zollo, Brian Carmody, Michael G. Wilson, Orin Wolf and The Shubert Organization. Robert Cole is executive producer, in association with New York Theatre Workshop.
