GLENDALE (KTLA)-
The Westboro Baptist Church announced on its website that it planned to protest outside four Glendale churches Sunday morning.
The church is known for protesting military and gay funerals with inflammatory signs.
Westboro members are upset about many things, including “phony Christians” and same-sex marriage, according to their website.
The protests were scheduled to take place outside Salem Lutheran Church and School, First United Methodist Church of Glendale, Glendale Presbyterian Church, and Holy Family Catholic Community, according to the website.
Community members said they planned a counter-protest along with the “Wall of Protection” group to protect parishioners entering the churches.
Things got a bit heated during the first protest in front of Salem Lutheran Church. After a few minutes, the crowds dispersed, and the 8:30 a.m. church service got underway.
The Westboro Baptist Church was also expected to protest outside the Golden Globe Awards Sunday afternoon, and members also planned to head to El Segundo High School Monday morning, the website stated.
KTLA’s Kareen Wynter contributed to this report.
