Data Monday: Growth of Mobile Social Networking

by May 28, 2012

It's been over a year since I compiled data about the growth of social networking on mobile devices. Since then lots has changed but not the upward trend as evidenced by Facebook's recent mobile milestones:

  • In the first quarter of 2011, people spent 25 minutes (37%) of their mobile "app-using time" in Games. They spent 15 minutes (22%) of their time in Social Networking apps. (source)
  • In the first quarter of 2012, Games use dropped by 4% down to 24 minutes per day, while Social Networking increased by 60% up to 24 minutes per day. (source)
  • Facebook, the world's largest social network had 500 million mobile users and 901 million monthly active users at the end of April 2012. (source)
  • In February 2010 Facebook had 100 million mobile users. This came less than six months after Facebook announced 65 million mobile users. (source)
  • Facebook's mobile growth was up 33% from the end of Q1 2011 to the end of Q1 2012. (source)
  • Time spent on Facebook’s mobile site and apps per month (441 minutes) surpassed usage of its desktop website (391 minutes) for Americans who use both Facebook interfaces in March 2012. (source)
  • 83 million monthly active users accessed Facebook solely from mobile in the month ending March 2012, up 43% from December 2011. (source)
