The Happy Endings gang’s huge pilot season is continuing.
Former Happy Endings EP Jonathan Groff has signed on to executive produce NBC’s comedy pilot Fifth Wheel, with Sean Saves the World’s Marc Buckland boarding as director, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
STORY: TV Pilots 2014: The Complete Guide
The ensemble comedy centers on a young woman who confronts her new reality after her last single friend gets engaged. YouTube duo Heidi Niedermeyer and Elena Crevello (Shit People Say in L.A.) will pen the script and serve as supervising producers. The multicamera comedy hails from ABC Studios and The Mark Gordon Co., with Gordon and Andrea Shay, who launched the comedy division four years ago, on board to executive produce. Groff, whose credits include How I Met Your Mother and Scrubs, also will serve as showrunner on the comedy.
Groff’s hire comes as Happy Endings alums continue to be in high demand this pilot season. Former co-star Zachary Knighton recently boarded Fox’s six-episode comedy Weird Loners, while Damon Wayans Jr. (New Girl), Adam Pally (The Mindy Project) and Elisha Cuthbert are receiving multiple offers. For their parts, Casey Wilson and Eliza Coupe already have projects lined up. Wilson will star in NBC comedy Marry Me, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe, while Coupe’s USA Network half-hour Benched — also from The Mark Gordon Co. — has already been picked up to series. Not to be outdone, Caspe also has a comedy, Cuz-Bros, in contention at CBS.
Groff is repped by UTA, Tim Sarkes at BEP and Jared Levine at Morris Yorn; Buckland (Better Off Ted, My Name Is Earl) is with ICM Partners and Paul Alan Smith at ES Artists.
