Agriculture teachers and students are gearing up for a huge protest at the State Capitol.

They’re upset that the public speaking and leadership skills kids learn through Future Farmers of America are threatened in the Governor’s budget.

His proposal would cut the agriculture educational incentive grants that provide more than $4 million worth of specialized  learning through matching funds.

With the new local funding formula schools wouldn’t have to spend any money this way at all.

“They’re the future of agriculture in our state. It’s the number one industry in the state of California. How do we not support students who are gonna fill the need for these agriculture positions in future to feed our growing population, which is gonna double by 2050,”  Galt High School agriculture Cheryl Reece said Wednesday.

Right now, there’s a letter campaign underway to get ag families to write their state legislator, encouraging them to oppose the cuts.

Expect to see bus loads of people storm the state Capitol on Ag day in March.
