In a Sunday sermon to his congregation on 13 May 2012, Pastor Charles L. Worley of North Carolina Providence Road Baptist Church stated that he was called and inspired by 'God' to find the best way to 'kill all the world's homosexuals once and for all' and is advocating mass genocide.

Freedom of speech or religion is one thing, but when you are exhorting people to 'help in the effort to find the best way of killing every gay person on the planet' you have clearly taken a giant step across the line. Freedom of religion also means freedom *from* religion. In August of 2010, I was set upon by 6 young men, their ring leader only 15 years old, who viciously beat and stomped me to literally within an inch of my life. I was on life support for 2 days, in ICU for four days and in the hospital for over 2 weeks. I had 13 compound rib fractures, a collapsed left lung and my right eyelid and cornea were torn off causing me permanent partial blindness in my right eye. My 'crime'? Being gay. The 'defense' (or mitigating factors) offered at trial? That the young man was told by his pastor that gays are abhorrent to God and need to die.

Religious zealots and other (far) right wing nut jobs like Pastor Worley need to be told loudly and in no uncertain terms that when you hold a position of actual or perceived 'authority' (be it moral or political in nature) and people act on your words, then yes, you will indeed answer to a 'higher authority' ... ME (and YOU, the signers of this petition) and anyone else who finds it repugnant that a so-called 'man of God' could act in a clearly un-'Christian' manner.
