Exclusive Download of the Week: Machinedrum, Luster

While the Internet has undoubtedly done a great service for musicians seeking exposure and music fiends trying to find more new music, one group often overlooked in think pieces about the subject is people who help bring these two sides together: bloggers, radio show hosts, and so forth. I can personally say my own involvement with electronic music would be nothing compared to what it is now if I didn’t have LWE as a platform. I imagine Rob Booth, proprietor of the Electronic Explorations radio show site, might say the same thing. His ad-free site has hosted more than 200 radio shows with guests ranging across the electronic music spectrum, although it’s obvious he has a soft spot for broken beats and bass music. In order to help support the site, Booth has put together a 58-track compilation of exclusive and often unreleased material that includes many of the site’s mix alumni, including Kahn, Kowton, Emika, Neil Landstrumm, Exercise One, Distal, and Arkist (among many others). This week’s exclusive download is taken from the comp — the unreleased “Luster” by the American-born, Berlin-based Machinedrum. Its smoky chords seep from beneath flurry of drum and bass-derived drum programming, some clicking like clockwork, other parts bouncing off the rims of snare drums. Despite this, his masterful arrangements, which hint a half-time beat, give “Luster” a relaxed, rather contemplative mood. Our thanks to Mr. Booth for making this available and to Machinedrum for contributing this to Electronic Explorations’ worthy cause. The compilation is available for £5 starting on July 1st.
