Urgent pleas for two Asians in need of bone marrow transplant

Moneet MannUrgent pleas have been issued worldwide to help two Asians in bad need of a bone marrow transplant.

Moneet Mann is from Brampton in Southern Ontario.

Money, as she is known to her friends, was diagnosed with acute leukemia this past October.

Her best chance at a match is a South Asian between the ages of 17 and 35 years old, reports the Vancouver Desi.

She recalls when she was diagnosed.

“Tears kept flowing down my face. It was difficult. I lost all control of my emotions,” she said. “I just stopped listening to his (doctor’s) words. He was trying to go on and he was trying to explain to me what it was. He kind of told me that you take a minute just to gather myself and he had left the room so I could just try to gather myself. Obviously, you can imagine, that couldn’t happen.”

Ryan Manansala, 29, from San Jose, CA has Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. reports ABS CBN.

He had a blood cord transfusion in March, but has since relapsed.

“When I read about people who survive, they call it the ‘new normal’,” said Ryan. “It’s not a bad thing. It’s my second chance to live.”

Doctors say his match must be Filipino.

How can you help? Unfortunately, it’s a familiar story. There are not enough Asians on the bone marrow registry. Doctors say matches for Asians must come from other Asians. Joining the registry is a simple procedure. You simply have to go in, and they’ll rub your tongue with a cotton swab. It’s that easy.

Do it today.
