Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey are shaping up to be quite the dynamic duo — at least where drama is concerned.
A month into the sophomore run of OWN soap The Haves and the Have Nots, the drama has posted another series high — leaping from its previous record (2.84 million viewers) to 3.35 million viewers.
Not only does that make it the top-performing scripted program in OWN’s brief history outside of the alternative sphere, it bested every other cable series on Tuesday night. The Haves and the Have Nots also outperformed three Big Four series: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Trophy Wife and Killer Women.
STORY: OWN Orders Series Based on Tyler Perry’s ‘Single Moms Club’
More good news for OWN is that the episode pulled a record 2.6 rating with its targeted women 25-54 demo. With the exception of NBC’s The Biggest Loser, the show was bigger than anything else on TV with adult women on Tuesday night.
Perry’s drama is indeed a triumph for OWN, but the multihyphenate’s comedy brand is not mirroring its success. His sitcom Love Thy Neighbor, which opened just 12,000 shy of The Haves and the Have Nots with a good-for-OWN 1.65 million viewers in 2013, recently returned to the lineup with significantly less steam. Last week’s episode averaged just 892,000 viewers.
Still, comedy is where OWN seems to be most invested with Perry. The network also acquired his TBS sitcom For Better or Worse, which premiered in September on par with its latest TBS numbers, though it dropped over the course of its 26-episode season. OWN also recently announced a series order for Perry comedy Single Moms Club, set to join the schedule in fall 2014.
